Rain damage triggers fresh veggie price hike in Kharsawan

Kharsawan, Oct 22 : The severe rainfall recorded throughout August and September has dealt a heavy blow to agriculture in Kharsawan, with the resulting impact now clearly reflected in soaring vegetable prices across the region.

Excessive precipitation hampered cultivation efforts and caused widespread crop damage in local fields, leading to a sharp drop in regional production.

As a direct consequence, weekly markets and neighborhood bazaars in Kharsawan have experienced a marked decline in local market arrivals.

To meet consumer demand, vendors are increasingly relying on produce imported from outside regions, but high transportation expenses and reduced overall supply have pushed retail costs upward.

Currently, many green vegetables in local markets are selling at or above ₹50 per kilogram. Local vendor Zafar Ali highlighted that the supply of staples such as tomatoes has dropped significantly, warning that prices could rise even further in the coming days unless supply chains stabilize.

Coming in the middle of the festive season, these inflated rates have placed a severe strain on household budgets and forced residents to alter their purchasing habits.

To stretch their daily finances, consumers are significantly reducing their purchase volumes. Shoppers who previously bought vegetables by the full kilogram are now opting for smaller quantities, such as 250 grams or half a kilogram.

Furthermore, households that once prepared a diverse mix of produce are now limiting themselves to a single vegetable per meal, while an increasing number of families are shifting toward alternatives like chana dal and soya chunks to replace expensive fresh greens.

This shift in consumer behavior has severely impacted local shopkeepers and street vendors. Merchants report a noticeable drop in overall customer footfall as well as smaller individual purchase amounts, resulting in a distinct decline in total sales volume.

Market sellers emphasize that until regional crop arrivals increase and supply constraints ease, residents in Kharsawan are unlikely to see relief from high vegetable prices anytime soon.
