LPG Crisis in Jamshedpur: Black Marketing Thrives, Prices Triple

Jamshedpur: A severe crisis is brewing in the kitchens of the Steel City. While global tensions in West Asia have impacted supply chains, the local administration’s failure to monitor the distribution of LPG has led to a rampant black market. Domestic gas cylinders, which carry an official price tag of ₹953, are now being sold by unscrupulous middlemen for a staggering ₹2,800 to ₹3,000.

A Crisis Exploited: The Cost of Inaction

The scarcity has created a “panic-buying” atmosphere across Jamshedpur. As genuine consumers are turned away with “No Stock” excuses, a shadow economy has emerged.

  • Domestic 14.2kg: Selling for ₹3,000 (Official: ₹953).

  • Commercial 19kg: Prices have skyrocketed to ₹4,500.

  • Small 5kg Units: Reaching ₹1,200, hitting low-income households the hardest.

The “Shadow” Delivery System

Black marketers have grown sophisticated to evade the little administrative pressure that exists. Delivery agents are reportedly refusing digital payments to avoid a paper trail, insisting on cash-only transactions. Furthermore, deliveries are being made using private scooters and cars rather than marked agency vans, often in secluded areas 100 meters away from the customer’s home to avoid prying eyes.

Paralyzed Administration and Rising Costs

Despite the chaos, the District Supply Department has limited its response to closed-door meetings. No dedicated task force has been formed, and no official helpline has been launched for victims of overcharging.

This fuel crisis is now spilling over into the local economy. In commercial hubs like Sakchi, Bistupur, and Golmuri, small food stalls are shutting down. Those that remain open have hiked food prices by ₹10 to ₹20, further burdening the common man already reeling from inflation.

✅ HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF: CONSUMER GUIDELINES

The District Supply Office is being pressured to act. In the meantime, follow these steps:

  • Refuse Cash-Only Demands: Always request a digital payment option or a printed tax invoice.

  • Check the Seal: Ensure the cylinder is not tampered with, as “refilled” or “underweight” cylinders often circulate during shortages.

  • Report Directly: Since there is no specific LPG helpline, call the National Consumer Helpline at 1915 or visit the District Supply Office in person to file a complaint against specific distributors.

  • Spread the Word: Share this article to help neighbors identify the tactics used by black marketers.
