- Ranked 2nd in Safai Mitra Suraksha Challenge among cities with population between 3 lakh and 10 lakh
- Awarded in Gold (Anupam) Category in Prerak Dauur Samman
- Jamshedpur City also emerged as a 3-star rating in the star rating system for Garbage Free Cities
Jamshedpur, Nov 20: Jamshedpur City has improved its position to 12th at the national Swachh Survekshan Awards. In 2020, it had been ranked 13th.
The awards were given out by at Delhi’s Vigyan Bhavan on November 20, 2021. The event titled ‘Swachh Amrit Mahotsav’ was organised by the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs (MOHUA).
Jamshedpur has rapidly improved its position at these Awards from 2017 onwards when it was at 64th rank . Tata Steel Utilities and infrastructure Services Limited (erstwhile JUSCO) has been working closely with the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) to improve the city’s standing at these awards.
As a result of their joint efforts the Jamshedpur has also bagged three additional awards this year.
- In the Prerak Dauur Samman award category for waste management (segregation, processing, recycling, and sanitation status), Jamshedpur has been awarded the Gold Category (Anupam) Award.
- In the Safai Mitra Suraksha Challenge category that evaluates safety arrangements for garbage collectors and sanitary workers, Jamshedpur has been ranked second in the entire country in the 3-10 lakh population category, behind Indore.
- Apart from that, Jamshedpur City has also been awarded a 3-star rating in the star rating system for Garbage Free Cities.
The awards were received jointly by Mr Suraj Kumar, DC, East Singhbhum, Mr Krishna Kumar, JNAC Special Officer and Captain Dhananjay Mishra, Senior General Manager, Jharkhand Business, Tata Steel UISL.
While congratulating and expressing happiness, gratitude and appreciation to the citizens of Jamshedpur, Tarun Daga, Managing Director, Tata Steel UISL said: “The awards represent the collective effort of all concerned I.e. citizens, the frontline workmen, district administration, the state government, the people’s representatives, Tata Steel and Tata Steel UISL. It has been a privilege to serve the city and the award encourages us to strive for the next levels in this cleanliness journey of the nation.”
Swachh Survekshan is an annual survey of cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation in cities and towns across India and was launched as a part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. This year, 4340 cities and 62 cantonment zones participated in the awards competition.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is now in the process of conducting the sixth edition of the survey to rank all cities under Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban with Quality Council of India as its implementation partner.
The objective of the survey is to encourage large scale citizen participation, ensure sustainability of initiatives taken towards garbage free and open defecation free cities. It aims to provide credible outcomes which would be validated by third party certification, institutionalize existing systems and create awareness.
Jamshedpur and Jugsalai bring laurels for state at the Swachh Survekshan 2021
State cleanest in less than 100 ULBs category
Civic bodies of Jamshedpur and Jugsalai won laurels at the Swachh Survekshan 2021. While Jharkhand emerged cleanest among states with less than 100 urban local bodies (ULBs).
Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee has been ranked 12th in Swachh Survekshan 2021, an improvement from the 13th rank in 2020.
Jamshedpur also received two special awards for garbage free city and Safai Mitra Safety Challenge at the Swachh Amrit Mahotsav award function held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
Jamshedpur was placed second in the country in Safai Mitra Surchha Challenge. In this, Jamshedpur also received a prize money of Rs five crores.
At the same time, like last year, this year also Jugsalai Municipal Council has again secured the first position in the state in the population category between 25,000 and 50,000 category.
Apart from this, Jugsalai Municipal Council was awarded “Best City in Citizen Feedback in the population category 25,000 – 50,000)” under “Swachh City Award”.
In this award ceremony, Deputy Commissioner of East Singhbhum, Suraj Kumar, executive officer of Jugsalai Municipal Council Jagdish Yadav, special officer of Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee Krishna Kumar, general Manager of TSUIS Dhananjay Mishra, city manager of Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee Sandeep Kumar attended.
Swachh Survekshan 2021 started from April 2020 and went on till February 2021. Its result was released today by President Ram Nath Kovind at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
Jugsalai has got 3169 marks out of 6000 in Swachh Survekshan. Apart from this, Jugsalai has also received ODF + certificate while Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee got the 1935.55 (out of 2400) in service level progress in the Swachh Survekshan 2021 and 1621 out of 1800 in citizen feedback and 1100 out of 1800 in certification (amassing 4656.51 out of 6000)

Jamshedpur tops in Jharkhand and Adityapur at number two in specific categories
Under the Swachh Survekshan 2021, Jamshedpur in Jharkhand has been ranked 12th among the top-20 cities of the country in the category with population of 3 to 10 lakhs. In this way Jamshedpur became the only city of Jharkhand among the 20 cleanest cities of the country in that category. Apart from this, New Delhi (NDMC) secured first position by scoring 5300.24 marks across the country.
Similarly, Adityapur Municipal Corporation stood second in Jharkhand and 140th in the country in less than 10 lakh category.
In Jharkhand, Deoghar got the third position in the specific population category, while in the country it was ranked 142. On the other hand, Mango Municipal Corporation was fourth in Jharkhand and 149th in the country in the specific population category.
Jugsalai and JNAC officials give credit to better waste collection
Swachh Bharat Competition 2020, Jugsalai was ranked 9th among the cities with less than 50 thousand population in eastern India.
After receiving the award, Executive Officer of Jugsalai Municipal Council, JP Yadav, while talking on the phone, said that the credit of making Jugsalai the number one in Eastern India goes to the residents of Jugsalai. Apart from this, there was a commendable contribution of sanitation workers, employees, city manager Rajendra Prasad, sanitation expert Soni Kumari etc. involved in cleaning work.
Special officer of Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee, Krishna Kumar and Executive Officer of Jugsalai Municipal Council, JP Yadav says that the biggest reason for coming number one in Jharkhand was, door to door service was extended to every street of Jugsalai. The people were appealed to give the garbage in the city council’s vehicle only. The seminar made people aware of Recycle, Reuse, Reduce techniques.
In order to make people aware about waste, a calendar was distributed in the new year, in which garbage segregation was told. Market committee, members of residential society and septic tank operator were informed about the right methods of waste disposal. A public awareness campaign was conducted up to the street mohallas regarding cleanliness awareness campaign.
Selfie point was made by removing the old dustbin. Paintings were done on the walls and cleanliness competition was organised in schools, hotels, apartments.
CM and urban development Secy thanks people
Jharkhand urban development secretary Vinay Choubey said under the able leadership of chief minister Hemant Soren the department is working tirelessly to keep the cities clean.
“We hope to perform better in the coming years,” said Choubey.
“It’s an honour for us to be selected as the best-Performing state in the Swachh Survekshan 2021 award. I thank all the people of the state for their contribution in keeping our cities clean,” said chief minister Hemant Soren.
