Jamshedpur: MLA of Jamshedpur West Saryu Roy has written a letter to the Deputy Municipal Commissioner of the Mango Municipal Corporation (MMC), describing the current state of the Mango drinking water project as deeply alarming. He demanded that the Deputy Municipal Commissioner publicly release the latest status of the drinking water supply and the project so that operational flaws can be rectified and concrete steps can be taken to regularize the water supply.
Roy noted that every component of the water project has deteriorated over the past five to six years. The condition of the assets—stretching from the intake well to the water treatment plant (WTP) and the water towers—as well as the overall operations and final household delivery, remain unsatisfactory.
The MLA pointed out in his letter that since the conclusion of the Mango Municipal Corporation elections, newly elected officials frequently release contradictory statements to the press regarding this issue. He urged the Deputy Municipal Commissioner to announce the actual status publicly to clear the air, eliminate operational errors, and streamline the urban water supply system.
Roy’s letter stated that six to eight feet of sand had accumulated inside the intake well, which is damaging the machinery. To address this, a proposal to desilt the well using the MLA Local Area Development (MLALAD) fund was approved. Furthermore, Roy allocated funds from his MLA quota to construct retaining walls on both sides of the well to prevent man-made waste and pollution from entering the river water intake.
“We had previously agreed on an outline to ensure a proportionate and equitable water supply across all areas from the water treatment plant. However, the Mango Municipal Corporation failed to implement this effectively,” Roy said. “Large neighbourhoods are deprived of drinking water, while other vast sections receive water for a meagre 5 to 10 minutes daily. Water is available only between 12:00 AM and 2:00 AM in some areas— Roy described it as both worrisome and ridiculous.
