Jamshedpur hosts Jharkhand’s first ‘Purple Fair’ to empower persons with disabilities

Jamshedpur: In a landmark step towards creating an inclusive and empowering environment for persons with disabilities, Jharkhand’s first district-level Purple Fair was successfully organised at Birsa Munda Town Hall, Sidhgora. The event was hosted by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, in collaboration with Integrated Regional Skill Development, Rehabilitation and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Ranchi) and the District Administration of East Singhbhum.

Themed “For the Disabled, By the Disabled”, the fair provided a vibrant platform for Divyangjans to showcase their talents, explore employment and training opportunities, and connect with government schemes aimed at building self-reliance and inclusivity.

The event was inaugurated by Jamshedpur East MLA and State Disability Advisory Board Member  Purnima Sahu and State Disability Commissioner  Abhayanandan Ambasht, who jointly lit the ceremonial lamp. Both dignitaries praised the skill, spirit, and determination of the participants and affirmed continued support for such initiatives across the state.

In her address,  Purnima Sahu said, “This Purple Fair is a shining example of the capabilities and confidence of Divyangjans. We are proud that Jharkhand’s first such fair has been hosted in Jamshedpur. The administration and society must continue working hand in hand to promote inclusive development.”

Ambasht added, “This fair is a significant step toward mainstreaming persons with disabilities. We plan to organize similar events in other districts to ensure no one is left behind.”

Over 600 participants including Divyangjans, their families, school students, Anganwadi workers, social organizations, and district officials participated in the event. A total of 50 artists with physical, visual, hearing, intellectual, and autism spectrum disabilities showcased performances in dance, music, and poetry, earning applause from the audience. Exhibition of handicrafts and creative works by Divyang artisans drew attention to their talent and craftsmanship.

About 12 information stalls were put out by government and non-government bodies offering details on education, training, employment, and rehabilitation opportunities.

Special Olympics Bharat hosted accessible games for children with disabilities and honored four Para Olympians from Jharkhand who won medals in Berlin 2023.

Symbolic distribution of assistive aids such as wheelchairs, hearing aids, motorized tricycles, and auxiliary devices to 28 Divyang and elderly beneficiaries under ADIP and Vayo Yojana.

With support from Saksham Foundation and ONGC, 38 Sarathi Smart Canes and 30 Jyoti AI Smart Glasses from Torch It were distributed to visually impaired participants.

The venue was transformed into a fully accessible space with ramps, barrier-free toilets, and stage access, ensuring smooth participation for all attendees.

Director of the Ranchi-based Integrated Regional Skill Development Centre announced that the success of this Purple Fair has encouraged the planning of similar events across other districts in the coming months.
