Jamshedpur: Compensation for 1984 Sikh riot victims to finally materialise

Jamshedpur, Oct 26: In a significant development, families of the victims of the 1984 Sikh massacre are set to receive compensation after a prolonged struggle lasting 39 years, according to Satnam Singh Gambhir, the East India President of All India Sikh Students Federation.

Families of the victims, who have endured the repercussions of the tragic 1984 Sikh massacre, will finally receive compensation. In Ranchi, six victims are expected to receive Rs 11.39 lakh each. The Jharkhand government is allocating Rs 36 lakh to one victim in Ramgarh, Rs 18 lakh to 10 victims in Palamu, and a substantial Rs 1 crore 20 lakh to 24 victims in Bokaro.

Gambhir, who has been at the forefront of the legal battle to secure justice for the families of the 1984 victims, shared this update during a press conference in Sakchi. He emphasized the significance of the Federation’s struggle, and the results that are now emerging.

He filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Jharkhand High Court, leading to a one-member commission meeting with the Jharkhand government in 2016. The objective was to determine the compensation to be provided to the remaining victims’ families.

Gambhir expressed the need for expediting the compensation process for the remaining victim families, highlighting that many years have already passed. He urged swift action to ensure that relief reaches the victim families at the earliest.

The Sikh victim families from across Jharkhand have been rallying for speedy justice. Gambhir assured them that he would present their demands before the 1984 Sikh Riots Inquiry Commission led by DP Singh.

Former president of Sakchi Gurdwara Sahib Harvinder Singh Mantu, former president of Mango Gurdwara Sahib Inder Singh Inder, Mohinder Singh Bhui, Sarabjit Singh Bhullar were present during the press conference.

The announcement marks a long-awaited milestone for the affected families, bringing hope and recognition to their decades-long struggle for justice and compensation.
