Jamshedpur, Dec 17: The district administration on Wednesday carried out an anti-encroachment drive in the Adityapur police station area, removing illegal roadside structures with the help of JCB machines.
The operation covered the stretch from Pan Dukan Chowk to the NIT Mor, where several temporary shops had occupied public land.
Shopkeepers alleged that they were given very little notice, leaving them unable to remove their goods in time.
As a result, merchandise worth several lakhs of rupees was damaged during the demolition.
Traders claimed that adequate prior intimation could have prevented the losses and accused the authorities of acting hastily.
When questioned about the grievances, the Deputy Municipal Commissioner and the Traffic Police In-charge refrained from offering a clear response, further fuelling resentment among the affected vendors.
While expressing support for city beautification, shopkeepers said their livelihoods depended on these establishments and urged the administration to act with sensitivity.
Officials, however, maintained that the drive was undertaken to ensure cleanliness, safety, and improved aesthetics of the city.
They also warned against future encroachments on public roads.
The action was additionally linked to preparations for the President’s scheduled visit to the National Institute of Technology on December 29.
The drive was conducted in the presence of Parul Singh, Vinod Tirkey, Sanjeev Kumar Singh, alongwith the traffic police and a large contingent of security personnel.
