US F-35 Fighter Jet Shot Down in Iran; Pilot Missing

Tehran: Tensions in the Middle East reached a new flashpoint on Friday as Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) announced the destruction of a second U.S. F-35 fighter jet over central Iran. Following the crash, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency reported that U.S. recovery efforts for the pilot have failed, with some sources claiming Iranian forces have already captured the aviator.

Failed Recovery Mission

Sources in Iran’s western Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province told Tasnim that U.S. forces launched an intensive search-and-rescue operation early Friday. The mission reportedly utilized Black Hawk helicopters and a C-130 Hercules aircraft in an attempt to extract the pilot, who had ejected before the advanced fighter jet crashed.

Despite these aerial efforts, Tasnim characterized the mission as “futile,” stating that the pilot landed well within Iranian borders.

Claims of Capture

The IRGC identified the downed aircraft as belonging to the Lakenheath squadron. While U.S. officials reportedly believed the pilot remained alive and attempted an extraction, Tasnim’s correspondent indicated that Iranian military forces likely intercepted and captured the pilot before U.S. teams could reach the location.

Escalating Aerial Conflict

This incident follows a string of claims by the IRGC regarding American hardware:

  • Previous Strikes: Last week, the IRGC claimed its air defenses struck a U.S. F-16 Fighting Falcon and an MQ-9 Reaper drone in southern Iranian airspace.

  • Retaliatory Operations: The IRGC’s Navy and Aerospace Division framed these hits as part of joint retaliatory strikes against U.S. and Israeli industrial interests.

The current escalation stems from a series of joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran that began on February 28. Iran and its regional allies have since responded with a wave of attacks against Western interests across the Middle East, utilizing “new advanced defense systems” to target high-end stealth technology like the F-35.
