Jamshedpur, June 10: The Sakchi police have apprehended three members of an interstate bike theft gang, leading to the recovery of 12 stolen bikes from various locations. The arrests were made following diligent investigations by the police, with efforts underway to capture other absconding members of the gang from various locations including West Bengal.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Durga Mahato from Adityapur Saldih Basti, Pradeep Mahato from Chakradharpur Shantinagar, and Bhojohari Mahato from Nimdih. After thorough interrogation, all three were remanded to judicial custody on Monday.

Providing details during a press conference at the Sakchi police station, City DSP Sudhir Kumar highlighted the continuous theft of vehicles in Sakchi, Bistupur, and nearby areas. Consequently, a dedicated police team was formed under the leadership of the City SP to address the issue.
On June 9, the police received information about suspicious activities near Sakchi’s MGM Hospital. Acting swiftly, the Sakchi police team apprehended Durga Mahato and Pradeep Mahato along with a stolen bike. Subsequently, on their revelation, Bhojohari Mahato was arrested from Murukdih Haven in the Nimdih Thana area and two additional stolen bikes recovered.
Further investigation revealed that the interstate bike theft gang operated beyond Jamshedpur, stealing and selling bikes across different locations. The gang strategically hid stolen bikes in various houses and sold them at will, with a primary market in West Bengal. The gang would sell the stolen bikes at varied prices, ranging from five thousand to fifteen thousand rupees, and divide the proceeds among themselves.
DSP Sudhir Kumar emphasized that the gang’s mastermind, Bhajohari Mahato, orchestrated the operations, while Durga and Pradeep executed the thefts. The gang’s modus operandi involved swift resale of stolen bikes often at lower prices to avoid detection.
The gang’s connections with West Bengal had prompted police to collaborate with the West Bengal authorities for further investigation and potential raids to dismantle the operation.
