Int’l Conf. on Sustainable Quality Steelmaking Starts at SNTI Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur: Tata Steel, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) Jamshedpur Chapter, CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML), and the All India Induction Furnaces Association (AIIFA), launched the International Conference on Sustainable Quality Steelmaking (ICSQS-2026) on Thursday. The two-day event, hosted at Shavak Nanavati Technical Institute (SNTI), focuses on emerging trends in Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) and Induction Furnace (IF) technologies.

Strategic Push for Green Steel

The conference brings together over 200 delegates, including researchers, technology leaders, and plant operators, to address the evolving landscape of alternative steelmaking routes. Key dignitaries, including Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury (Director, CSIR-NML), Mr. Yogesh Mandhani (President, AIIFA), and Mr. Subodh Pandey (VP Technology, Tata Steel), inaugurated the event.

Mr. Subodh Pandey, Patron of ICSQS 2026, highlighted Tata Steel’s global operations and emphasized the critical need for steel cleanliness during the transition to “green steel.” He noted that technological advancements in China serve as a benchmark for waste management and cost optimization in sustainable production.

Technical Challenges and Innovations

Experts addressed the specific logistical and metallurgical hurdles facing the industry:

  • Tramp Elements: Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury raised concerns regarding scrap quality, specifically the rising concentration of tramp elements as EAF and IF usage increases.
  • Technology Partnerships: Mr. Yogesh Mandhani called for stronger partnerships between primary and secondary steelmakers to integrate new furnace technologies effectively.
  • Metallurgical Excellence: Dr. T. Bhaskar, Chairman of ICSQS 2026, and Dr. Atanu Ranjan Pal, CTO (Process) Tata Steel, underscored the importance of aligning furnace technology with sustainable quality standards.

Five Core Pillars of ICSQS-2026

The technical sessions are organized around five critical themes:

  1. Furnace Technology & Ancillary
  2. Valorisation and Sustainable Growth
  3. Scrap and Raw Material Quality
  4. Metallurgical Process Control and Liquid Steel Quality
  5. Modelling and Digitalisation

The conference will continue till April 24, providing a roadmap for the future of sustainable liquid steel production and digitalization in the metal industry.
