Jamshedpur, Sept 3: Heavy rains on Sunday led to water with fly ash entering homes along Bamangora Main Road. Sources stated that the heavy rainfall led Tata Power to release water that also contained fly ash through drains and pipes leading to a flood-like situation with the contaminated water entering homes. After the rain stopped, the water level receded bringing a semblance of relief to affected residents. However, stagnant water remained in people’s homes and courtyards for an extended period.
Deepak Kumar, a local resident, stated, “People have been living in Bamangora for well over 50 years without experiencing situations that led to flooding in homes. However, since Tata Power established a sand pond in the nearby white mountainous region and started releasing excess water mixed with fly ash in it during monsoons, the situation has taken a turn for the worse. Water contaminated with fly ash is being discharged into the pond which poses a health hazard and threat to crops and livestock.”
Deepak went on to inform, “A similar incident had occurred two years ago when fly ash along water entered people’s homes during the night, leading to newspaper headlines and public outrage. However, Tata Power acknowledged its mistake and dispatched workers to segregate the fly ash from the water that was finally released into the fields.”
When a similar situation had arisen last year, a legislator had visited the locality but the conditions have not changed.
