Hansa Pal, mother of mountaineer Bachendri Pal passes away aged 98

Jamshedpur, Jan. 30: Hansa Pal, mother of Padma Shri mountaineer Bachendri Pal died during treatment at Tata Main Hospital on Monday morning.

She was 98. Soon after getting the news, acquaintances and well-wishers gathered in large numbers at her 36 Kaiser Bungalow at Circuit House Area while senior Tata Steel officials along with employees and workers of Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF) visited the hospital.

Her last rites were performed at Bhuiyandih Subarnarekha Ghat crematorium in the afternoon in presence of Bachendri Pal, Rajendra Singh Pal (son of Hansa Pal), Sunil Bhaskaran, vice president (Corporate Service), Tata Steel, mountaineer Premlata Agarwal, senior officials of Tata Steel, neighbours and many other dignitaries.

Hansa Pal had an accidental fall in the bathroom of her house on January 14 last. She was admitted to TMH where her condition failed to improve, sources said.

Hansa Pal was married to Kishan Singh after he moved from Bampa, a small mountain village to Nakuri Village. She was living with his daughter Bachendri Pal and son Rajendra Singh Pal (also a mountaineer) in Jamshedpur ever since Bachendri Pal joined Tata Steel in the year 1984 as the Chief of Tata Steel Adventure Foundation, after her successful Mt. Everest expedition on 23rd May, 1984.
