Grimmer days for Mango residents due to non-completion of power grid

Jamshedpur : Residents of Mango will continue to suffer from power crisis this summer, due to the non-completion of the ambitious new power grid sub-station at Baliguma on the National Highway – 33.

Officials of Jharkhand Urja Vikas Nigam Limited ( JUVNL) today said that the power project worth several crores will take at least six months to become operational.

“Power Grid Corporation of India Limited has been selected to execute the project. The corporation is yet to submit a drawing of the project to us. Only after submission of the drawing and approval from JUVNL work can begin at the site of the project in Baliguma , said S K Singh, general manager ( Transmission) of JUVNL.

Notably, the power grid sub-station project was first thought of in the year 2010. A land was also identified at Baliguma for the project. But, since it was a forest land the project could not take off. Hunt for a suitable land for the project continued and finally JUVNL zeroed in on the six acres of land.

The senior JUVNL official, was however optimistic of commencement of work in the next couple of weeks. ” We have been informed that the preparation of the drawing for the project is at final stages and that the corporation is expected to submit it to JUVNL in the next one week,” he said adding that after the submission of the drawing JUVNL will take another one week to give its approval.

The 100 MW grid sub-station will come up on six acres of land. The project will cost around Rs 42-crore. Former agriculture minister Banna Gupta had earlier given nod for the project which will come up on an agricultural land. Foundation stone of the project was also laid last year.

JUVNL officials said that even if the power grid sub-station comes up at Baliguma they will face hurdles in installation of towers for the transmission cable.

” For taking the power supply line to Baliguma we are required to construct towers through the Transportnagar which falls on the way. The land owners have refused to provide us space for installation of the towers. Negotiations are on with them for finding out a way out,” said another JUVNL official.

In the absence of a power grid sub-station, the entire Mango locality with a population of around two lakh will continue to suffer especially during peak summers due to frequent breakdowns.

“The power grid sub-station was planned to reduce the distance of power transmission line. Presently, the 33 KV power transmission line is drawn from Gamharia and Chandil which comes to the Pardih sub-station from where it is supplied to various localities in Mango.

The new power grid sub-station was planned to avoid dependence on the Gamharia or the Manique grid in Chandil,” explained an official.
