Jamshedpur: In an effort to ensure inclusive, accessible, and barrier-free elections, the Election Commission has implemented a range of special facilities for differently-abled voters during the upcoming 45-Ghatshila (ST) Assembly By-Election. These measures are aimed at empowering every voter, regardless of physical ability, to participate fully and independently in the democratic process.
The Chief Electoral Officer, Jharkhand, has taken several steps to make polling stations more voter-friendly and accessible. Key initiatives include the introduction of Braille Voter Information Slips (VIS) and Braille-enabled Ballot Papers to assist visually impaired voters. With these features, visually challenged individuals can now read essential voting information and identify their preferred candidates with ease, thereby promoting independent and confident voting.
To further enhance accessibility, the Election Commission has ensured adequate transport facilities for voters with physical disabilities. Arrangements for ramps and wheelchairs at every polling booth are being made to guarantee smooth entry and exit for voters requiring physical assistance. These facilities aim to eliminate mobility barriers and make the voting process seamless and dignified.
Additionally, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be equipped with Braille features, enabling visually impaired voters to cast their vote independently without external help. For those who may still require personal support, the Commission has allowed the presence of assistants or companions to help them in casting their vote.
Special attention has also been given to sensitizing polling officials and volunteers to handle such cases with care and empathy. Mock drills and training sessions are being organized to familiarize staff with the needs of differently-abled voters and ensure that polling day proceeds smoothly for everyone.
These steps reflect the Election Commission’s broader commitment to inclusive governance and its vision of “Accessible Elections for All.” By integrating accessibility into the electoral framework, the Commission aims to remove all physical, social, and informational barriers that may prevent citizens from exercising their fundamental right to vote.
The Chief Electoral Officer, Jharkhand, has appealed to all eligible voters, especially those with disabilities, to come forward and participate enthusiastically in the Ghatshila by-election. The Commission reiterated its resolve that no voter should be left behind due to any physical or logistical limitation.
