Security stepped up at Ghaghidih Central Jail
Jamshedpur: Gangster Akhilesh Singh (39) was sent to the jail after his two-day police remand ended on Sunday. Security has been beefed up at Ghaghidih Central Jail.
The gangster’s wife Garima Singh who was also on the police remand for interrogation in connection with a forgery case registered with the Birsanagar thana has also been lodged in the central this afternoon.
Superintendent, Ghaghidih Central Jail, Satyendra Kumar Chaudhury said they have given an order to the guards on prison-gate duty for maintaining strict vigil while frisking the visitors.
“At present we have over 120 guards in the prison and all the guards have been asked to remain alert on the visitors who will come to meet Akhilesh Singh. We have also asked the guards to ensure that no unwanted materials, like cellphone, charger, mobile SIM card may get into the jail at any cost,” said Chaudhury.
The central jail superintendent said all the 24 CCTV cameras installed inside the prison have been checked so as to ensure of the footages of the jail inmates may be taken effectively.
In March 2009, Paramjeet Singh, who was an arch rival of the gangster Akhilesh was shot dead inside the Ghaghidih Central Jail, prompting the supporters of Paramjeet to lynch the shooter soon afterward.
The central jail superintendent, Chaudhury said a few days after the 2009 shooting inside the central jail, the district administration had sent several of the key associates of Akhilesh from Ghaghidih to other jails across the state.
Meanwhile, OC, Birsanagar, Upendra Narayan Singh said after the police remand was over Akhilesh and his wife were sent back to the central jail under tight security.
Notably, the arrest of Akhilesh Singh had become a challenge for the police and administration. which had declared a reward of Rs 5 lakh on the head of the fugitive. Son of Chandragupt Singh, general secretary of Jharkhand Police Association, Akhilesh set up a network extortionists and shooters.
The don stepped into the crime world by abducting the mobil merchant Om Prakash Kabra on July 21, 2001. After his name figured in the Kabra abduction case, he had surrendered in the court on August 6, 2001. He fled the judicial custody on February 18, 2002. He was arrested from Varanasi on October 7, 2004. On September 2, 2007, he was granted a parole for attending his ailing mother.
A police official said that they want to give a message that no one can become rich by running a racket of extortion. He said that several close associates who used to help Akhilesh in perpetuating the extortion racket, notorious criminal have already been taken into custody for interrogation.
Meanwhile the security of Ghaghidih Central Jail has been tightened in view of the remand of criminal and mafia don Akhilesh Singh. Sources said that authorities of the jail were prompted to further tighten security as there is a probability of a gangwar between members of Akhilesh Singh gang and Paramjeet Singh, who are lodged in the jail.
