Ranchi, Feb 16: Justice Vinod Kumar Gupta, the first Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court, passed away on February 15, 2025. Born on September 10, 1947, he completed his law degree from Delhi University and started his legal practice in the Delhi High Court in 1970.
He served as Advocate General of Jammu and Kashmir and Senior Standing Counsel for the Central Government before being appointed a judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court in 1990. He later served in the Calcutta High Court before becoming Jharkhand’s first Acting Chief Justice upon the state’s formation on November 15, 2000. He was sworn in as permanent Chief Justice on December 5, 2000 and later held the position of Chief Justice in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand High Courts.
Justice Gupta’s passing is a significant loss to the judiciary and his contributions to the legal system will always be remembered.
