Farewell to India’s Economist

Dr. Manmohan Singh’s passing marks the end of an era for the Indian economy. His legacy as a transformative leader began over three decades ago on July 24, 1991, when he presented a historic budget as Finance Minister. With honesty and clarity, he acknowledged the economy’s shortcomings, a rare gesture in political history. Credit also belongs to the astute leadership of then-Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, who entrusted Singh to steer the country out of its economic crisis. This trust, built on Singh’s integrity and expertise, later elevated him to the Prime Minister’s office.

Dr. Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister proved pivotal, especially during the 2008 global economic crisis. While many nations faltered, India weathered the storm, owing much to its liberal economic policies and robust small-savings culture—a foundation laid by Singh’s reforms. His earlier leadership during the 1991 crisis, when India had to pledge its gold reserves, ensured the nation never faced such humiliation again.

Singh’s visionary reforms opened India’s markets to the world, unlocking economic potential that continues to bear fruit. Initiatives like the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) showcased his deep understanding of India’s socio-economic fabric, addressing both poverty and unemployment. Standing in Parliament on July 24, 1991, Singh warned that inaction would lead to economic collapse. His call for decisive measures set India on a path of unprecedented growth.

The results of Singh’s reforms are evident today. India’s GDP contribution to the world has grown from a mere 1% before 1990 to nearly 9% today. The Bombay Stock Exchange index, which hovered around 1,000 points in 1991, has now surpassed 78,000. These milestones underscore the impact of the economic liberalization Singh initiated.

As India stands as the world’s fourth-largest economy, Singh’s vision remains central to its progress. His ability to admit economic flaws and take bold actions laid the groundwork for transformation. In his iconic 1991 speech, Singh quoted Victor Hugo: “No power in the world can stop an idea whose time has come.” Declaring India’s emergence as a global economic force, he assured Parliament and the world, “India is alert, we will be victorious, we will succeed.”

This optimism and determination resonate today as India strives to achieve its economic aspirations. Dr. Singh’s belief in India’s potential serves as a guiding light for policymakers, reminding them to act with courage and clarity. His legacy is a call to action—to continue building on the economic foundation he so carefully crafted.

As we bid farewell to this extraordinary economist, his words and deeds remind us of the responsibility to carry his vision forward. India’s economic journey owes much to the man who recognized its strength, charted its path, and set it firmly on the road to global prominence.
