Jamshedpur: The industrial town of Adityapur in Seraikela Kharswan is buzzing with optimism as ‘Kolhan Tiger’ Champai Soren ascends to the position of Chief Minister. The local population erupted into celebration the moment the news reached them, heralding a new era for the region. Seraikela, Champai’s constituency, transformed into a jubilant zone with people flocking to his residence in Gamharia to express their joy and support.

Champai Soren, renowned for his firebrand politics, played a pivotal role in ensuring mass employment in various industries across the Seraikela Kharswan district. The industrial areas of Adityapur, Ghamharia, Kandra, and Chandil, however, have long struggled with poor infrastructure—ranging from dilapidated roads to inadequate bridges, water shortages, and erratic power supply. Local entrepreneurs now pin their hopes on the newly appointed Chief Minister to address these challenges.

As the aspirations of the community rise with Champai Soren assuming the role of Chief Minister, there is a widespread expectation that his dynamic leadership will contribute to the development of essential infrastructure in the region.

“Some people have perpetuated hereditary politics for decades without focusing on development. Seraikela Kharsawan district has the potential to grow, but the deplorable conditions of roads, water, and air have been major hurdles. The public is eagerly anticipating a positive change in the state after the formation of the new government,” remarked, a local political activist.

JMM legislators from Kolhan, who had advocated for Champai Soren’s inclusion in the cabinet too, expressed their elation at his appointment. “We are pleased that the party has considered our demands. Champai da is the senior most and a deserving choice for the party,” said a leader of JMM.
The 68-year-old Champai Soren, MLA from Seraikela, also serves as the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha vice president. Having been associated with JMM chief Shibu Soren since the Jharkhand movement, Champai is considered not only a trusted leader within the Soren family but also a dedicated worker.
Champai Soren’s political journey is marked by resilience and commitment. He served as a minister in the government of BJP leader Arjun Munda from 2010 to 2013, holding responsibilities for crucial ministries. Despite challenges, including a narrow victory in the first-ever elections for the Jharkhand assembly in 2005, Champai Soren has consistently won the assembly elections from Seraikela since 2005.
In addition to his political achievements, Champai Soren is recognized for his contributions to infrastructure and development, particularly in the industrial belt of Seraikela Kharswan.
His remarkable electoral victories reflect the unwavering support he has garnered from the people of Seraikela, where he has triumphed in the assembly elections six times.
Champai Soren made his political debut in 1991 and clinched victory as an independent candidate. This marked the commencement of a political saga that would endure for decades. In 1995, Champai transitioned to the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) ticket, solidifying his commitment to the party’s ideals and becoming a stalwart representative for the people of Seraikela.
Amongst his many triumphs, Champai faced a solitary defeat in the 2000 elections. Undeterred, he rebounded from this setback, laying the foundation for an unbroken winning streak in subsequent years. Since 2005, Champai Soren has consecutively secured victory in the assembly elections from Seraikela, a testament to the unwavering faith and trust bestowed upon him by the electorate.
In a notable phase of his political career, Champai served as a cabinet minister in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government from September 11, 2010, to January 18, 2013. This period saw him shouldering significant responsibilities within the government.
Transitioning to a pivotal role, Champai Soren assumed the position of Minister of Food Supply and Transport Department in the Hemant Soren cabinet from July 13, 2013, to December 28, 2014. This marked his contribution to crucial sectors influencing the lives of the people.
In 2019, Champai Soren was entrusted with the responsibilities of the Minister of Transport, SC-ST, and Backward Class Welfare. His multifaceted role showcased his commitment to the welfare and upliftment of diverse sections of society.
