Jamshedpur: A dramatic confrontation unfolded between police and alleged snatchers near the JAP-6 gate in the Sidgora police station area on Monday evening, when members of a snatching gang reportedly opened fire while attempting to evade arrest. Following a retaliatory response and a joint search operation by district police and JAP personnel, two accused were arrested and a cache of weapons, ammunition, and stolen items was recovered.
The incident created panic in the area for a brief period and prompted the deployment of a large police force.
Woman robbed in Telco sparks citywide police operation
The chain of events began on Monday afternoon when two motorcycle-borne miscreants allegedly snatched jewellery from a woman near Ghadi Park in the Telco police station area and fled from the spot.
After receiving the complaint, police launched an intensive vehicle-checking drive across the city in an effort to track down the suspects.
During the operation, police personnel noticed two suspicious youths riding a Pulsar motorcycle near the JAP-6 gate and attempted to stop them for questioning.
Criminals fire at police during pursuit
According to police sources, the suspects ignored the signal to stop and accelerated in an attempt to escape. A chase ensued, during which the alleged pillion rider opened fire at the pursuing police team.
The sudden gunfire triggered panic in the vicinity and led to heightened security measures. Police personnel responded by returning fire and intensifying the pursuit.
As pressure mounted, the accused abandoned their motorcycle and fled into the JAP-6 complex.
Joint operation leads to arrests
Following the incident, district police and JAP personnel jointly cordoned off the area and launched a search operation. One accused was apprehended shortly after entering the complex, while the second suspect managed to evade arrest temporarily.
However, after an extensive search lasting nearly three hours, special police teams succeeded in arresting the second accused as well.
Police sources said that one of the accused sustained injuries while attempting to flee and was later admitted to a hospital under police custody for treatment.
Weapons, ammunition and stolen property recovered
During the operation, police recovered several incriminating items from the accused, including a sophisticated automatic pistol, live ammunition, snatched gold jewellery, cash, and a chemical spray allegedly used during criminal activities.
The Pulsar motorcycle used by the suspects was also seized.
Investigators have identified the prime accused who allegedly fired at the police as Gabru. Police have also detained his brother-in-law for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.
Senior officers rush to the spot
Following reports of the encounter, ASP Rishabh Trivedi reached the scene along with officers from Sidgora, Telco, Sitaramdera, and Bistupur police stations. A large contingent of police personnel was deployed to secure the area and assist in the search operation.
Link to larger gang under investigation
Police officials suspect that the arrested accused may have links to a larger inter-state criminal network involved in snatching and other property-related crimes. Interrogation of the accused is currently underway to gather information about recent snatching incidents reported from different parts of the city.
Officials said further details regarding the case, including possible gang connections, will be disclosed after the completion of the investigation and verification of evidence.
The arrests are being viewed as a significant breakthrough in the city’s efforts to curb the recent rise in snatching incidents and improve public safety.
