Elephants destroy houses in five Kharsawan villages

Jamshedpur, Feb: Wild elephants wreaked havoc in half a dozen villages under Kharsawan forest area in the wee hours of Monday. They destroyed several houses and ate up paddy, rice and other food grains kept inside, sources said.

Sources said the elephants entered Jhujhki village around 1 am and destroyed the mud house belonging to one Choutan Rautiya. The elephants also destroyed the house belonging to one Rasu Koladi around 1.30 am. Koladi somehow saved his life as he got under a heap of straw kept nearby.

Later, the elephants targeted the houseof Bhuda Majhi and Dolu Sardar. They reached Kantadih village around 3 am and ate up over 200 kg of paddy kept in the house of Gohan Hembram. The continued on their destruction spree till 5 am, said a villager.

Forest officials said compensation would be paid to the affected villagers.
