Kolkata, May 30: Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee was attacked during his visit to Sonarpur in West Bengal on Saturday, where he had gone to meet families affected by post-poll violence. Protesters allegedly threw eggs and stones at the TMC leader and raised “chor chor” slogans during the incident.
Visuals from the spot showed security personnel escorting Banerjee away from the area while he wore a helmet for protection. The Trinamool Congress claimed that BJP workers were behind the attack and accused them of assaulting the MP during his visit.
Speaking to reporters after the incident, Banerjee alleged that the attack was “BJP-sponsored” and accused the police of failing to provide security despite prior information about the visit. He claimed the attackers intended to kill him and said the entire incident had been captured on camera.
“My head was somehow spared because I was wearing a helmet. They tore my clothes and broke my spectacles,” Banerjee said. He also alleged that there was no police presence at the spot when the attack took place.
The TMC MP said he would not leave the area until proper security arrangements were made. “I will not move from here until police and forces ensure security,” he said while referring to the family he had come to meet.
According to Banerjee, the party had informed the police in advance about the visit through email and phone calls, but officials allegedly did not respond.
Later, police personnel and central forces reached the area and escorted Banerjee to safety amid rising tension.
Reacting to the incident, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien questioned the security arrangements and alleged that Banerjee’s life was put at risk during the visit.
The incident took place as Banerjee visited Sonarpur to meet families affected by post-poll violence in the area.
