Drowning deaths continue in Jamshedpur, no safety measures in sight

Mail News Service

Jamshedpur, May 25: Despite recurring tragedies, authorities in and around Jamshedpur remain lax in implementing preventive measures to avoid drowning incidents. On Saturday, two siblings drowned in a pond in Kowali village of Potka block, adding to the alarming toll of 27 drowning deaths reported between January and May 2025.

These accidents—occurring in rivers like Swarnarekha and Kharkai, or tourist areas like Dimna Lake—often involve schoolchildren and youth. Yet, safety markers, barricades and signage at dangerous spots are still missing. During festivals, meetings with administrative officials rarely address the urgent need to identify and secure hazardous zones.

Even today, no trained divers or life-saving equipment are stationed in vulnerable locations, despite multiple fatalities. Citizens and activists are now calling for systematic safety reforms and strict enforcement to prevent further loss of lives.
