New York: US President Donald Trump unleashed a barrage of foul language and religious imagery on social media Sunday, signalling a volatile shift in his strategy as a Tuesday deadline for Tehran to open the Strait of Hormuz looms.
“Open the F***in’ Strait, you crazy b*****ds, or you’ll be living in Hell,” Trump posted, spelling out the profanity in full. He punctuated the demand by invoking the Islamic deity: “Praise be to Allah.”
The outburst follows the rescue of a second crew member from a US jet that Iran shot down recently. On Easter eve, Trump issued a 48-hour ultimatum, warning that “all Hell will reign down” on Iran before concluding with “Glory be to GOD!”
Tehran Strikes Back
Iran immediately escalated the war of words. Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior advisor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, warned that a “single move” from Iran could disrupt global energy and trade if the White House repeats its “foolish mistakes.”
Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf directly countered Trump’s rhetoric on X, stating, “Your reckless moves are dragging the United States into a living HELL.”
Diplomacy Under Fire
This shift toward an all-out military threat likely cripples tripartite diplomatic efforts by Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt to defuse the crisis. Despite Trump’s claims last week that he had achieved “regime change” and was dealing with a “more reasonable regime,” his latest posts suggest a total collapse of negotiations.
Although Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi indicated Tehran remained open to talks in Islamabad, Trump’s “Power Plant Day” threat—a promise to destroy Iranian infrastructure this Tuesday—appears to have closed the door on a peaceful resolution.
Political Pressure at Home
Trump’s digital demarche comes as his domestic standing collapses:
- Approval Ratings: A CNN poll shows 64% of Americans disapprove of the military action against Iran.
- Job Performance: His approval rating has plummeted to 38%, nearing historic lows.
- Mid-term Threats: Generic polls suggest Democrats could flip the House in November, potentially triggering impeachment proceedings.
While previous presidents have used profanity in private or on “hot mics,” this marks the first time a US commander-in-chief has used such language as a formal, albeit digital, diplomatic ultimatum. As global energy prices spike, the President now faces a crisis he admits he did not foresee: Iran’s ability to choke the Strait of Hormuz and strike US allies in the Gulf.
