Jamshedpur, Nov 2: After a lull of almost two years, the city markets witnessed a boom time. Cars and bikes segment witnessed a rise in sales between 20 and 30 per cent during this Dhanteras as compared to last year.
Leading car dealers in Jamshedpur have had 160 bookings of cars with mid segment cars leading the pack as compared to last year.

“The sales had decreased last year but with the second wave of Covid over the glitter is back in the market and in a shift from earlier practice people are opting for mid-segment products having better looks and innovative features rather than hatchbacks like Alto and Wagon-R. This year more than 60 per cent sale is of Swift and Swift Dzire,” said a showroom owner.

The growth was also witnessed in the jewellery segment. “The sale figure had reduced by nearly 25 per cent last year but it has improved this year. People are opting for only gold and silver coins instead of splurging on expensive jewellery items.

Meanwhile, several shops trying to overcome slump have encroached the nearly eight feet pavements in front of their establishments on Bistupur main road, the commercial hub of steel city.

Over 60 shops dealing with pharmaceuticals, consumer products, electronics goods and garments have their establishment on this stretch which witnesses a huge number of customers during the Dhanteras.

“The sale of electronics items, utensils, jewellery, two and four wheelers is at its peak during the three-day of Dhanteras beginning from today. Obviously shopkeepers want to attract customers,” said an official of SCCI.

According to market survey, as compared to last year’s Dhanteras sale figures of over Rs 10 crore have shot up in the utensils, jewellery and automobile (two-wheelers and four-wheelers) segment in the city this year figures would be affected by global slump.

“During this time most of the people are on road on a buying spree increasing traffic volume and rush on pavements. Encroachment of pavements or any part outside earmarked areas for shops is illegal. However, in view of the Dhanteras season we understand that shopkeepers are trying to make some quick gains and hence have not taken any harsh action,” said the traffic police official.
