Cyclos lead Greenathon at Jamshedpur, 3000 participate

Jamshedpur: Tata Steel celebrates World Environment Day every year. While a host of events have been lined up to mark the occasion this year, the Environment Management and Sports Department of Tata Steel today organised �Greenathon�- a symbolic run/walk for the environment, starting from the JRD Tata Sports Complex. The event saw participation from a wide section of citizens from all walks of life.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) theme for the World Environment Day, 2019 is �Air Pollution�.

Sudhansu Pathak, Vice President Steel Manufacturing Tata Steel who was the Chief Guest at the event, flagged off �Greenathon 2019�. Suresh Paswan, Regional Officer-Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board also joined the event.

Speaking on the occasion, Sudhansu Pathak said, �Safeguarding the environment needs the commitment of all. The Greenathon today signifies the commitment of citizens of Jamshedpur towards the environment.� He congratulated the team for putting efforts to spread environmental awareness amongst the citizens of Jamshedpur, especially children and the youth. Pathak also mentioned that the efforts taken by Tata Steel towards environment protection in and around Steel Works were remarkable deserved high appreciation.

This year �Greenathon� saw participation from more than 3000 individuals. It was led by the young group of cyclists termed as �Cyclos�.

The run was followed by tree plantation at JRD Tata Sports Complex by all the dignitaries present.  Also present on the occasion were Madhulika Sharma, Tripti Roy,  Sumitesh Das, Ramesh Shankar along with other officers of Tata Steel.

On the occasion, Environment Management, Sports and Corporate Communications department of Tata Steel also organised Environment Debate Competition on UNEP theme �Beat Air Pollution� at JRD Tata Sports Complex, Jamshedpur for students of Jamshedpur.

Suresh Paswan, Regional Officer – Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board was the Chief Guest at the event. He urged all children and their parents also to come together and find sustainable alternatives so as to effectively combat air pollution so as to save our environment.

Ashish Kumar, Head Sports, Shubhanand Mukesh, Head Environment, Siddhartha Bortamuli, Head, Corporate Communications – Jharkhand and other officers from Tata Steel including Raju Agrawal, Anoop Srivastava, Brajesh Sharma, Padma Nabh Tripathy, Tirtha Prasad Sapkota, Vamsi, Nisha, Mritunjay Kumar, Feeroj Khan and Hasan Imam were present on the occasion.

On the other hand, about 80 children participated in debate competition. The competition was judged by Siddhartha Bortamuli and Prity Jha from Corporate Communications Department, Tata Steel, Jamshedpur. Winners of the Debate competition would be awarded on June 5, 2019 at SNTI, on the occasion of World Environment Day.
