Ranchi, July 25: State Congress President Rajesh Thakur hailed the Supreme Court’s recent decision on mineral taxation as historic. The court ruled in favor of states, including Jharkhand, having the authority to levy taxes on minerals and mines, overturning a 35-year-old precedent.
Thakur noted that this landmark decision restored Jharkhand’s rights and reduced its dependence on the Central Government for mineral-related revenues. Although Jharkhand was entitled to a share of the royalty collected by the Centre, the state had long faced delays in receiving these dues, which had hindered its economic growth.
The ability to impose taxes on minerals was expected to boost Jharkhand’s economic development significantly. The state’s rich mineral resources had historically contributed to the national economy and infrastructure development. With this new taxation power, Jharkhand can now generate substantial revenue locally, which will support various development initiatives for its residents. Thakur emphasized that this development would lessen the state’s reliance on central government funds for mineral income.
