Cold wave tweaks Jamshedpur school timings, city records 8.3 degrees

Jamshedpur : Jamshedpur-based schools that reopened on Thursday after winter vacations will run from 8:50 am to 1:45 PM. Amidst cold wave various school authorities in the city have instructed students to wear woolen uniforms in view of the fluctuating temperature and chilly in the daytime.

Most schools had made it mandatory for students to wear winter uniforms from November onwards. Jamshedpur recorded 8.3 degrees today with the mercury dropping at the night.

Father Pius Fernandes, principal, Loyola School School said, �We have decided to run classes from 8: 50 am as per the instructions. The administration changed the timings during the rise in chill in the air. We do not wish to take chances with the health of children. We have changed our timings for both junior and senior sections�.

Another school principal said parents had requested him to change school timings as it is difficult to wake up early in the morning.

Loyola School, Carmel Junior College, Sacred Heart Convent School, DBMS English School, Beldih Church School, Jamshedpur Public School are among the prominent schools, which have changed the school timing.

“The temperature is likely to stay around 8 and 9 degrees Celsius for the next couple of days,” said an official at the Met office.

There’s no timeframe, however, for the withdrawal of the revised schedule. “Depending on the weather condition, we will take further decision (to change the revised timing) but probably till the first week of February, the new schedule will be in force,” said a principal of a school.

The officials said that similar conditions will continue to prevail in the city in the coming days. The poor people on the streets have been the worst hit by the cold wave. Footpath dwellers and poor were seen cluster around bonfires lit from dry woods, used tyres and even garbage to beat the cold.

�Though a slender sunshine gave respite in the afternoon but the cool breeze gave chilling experience. Nights are becoming unbearable,� said an official.

Weatherman forecast that there will be no respite from the cold in the coming days. Significantly, both minimum and maximum temperatures were below normal all over the State.

Data available from the Patna Meteorological Office said that most parts of the state, including Jamshedpur, Ranchi and Daltonganj, were suffering with temperatures five degrees below normal.

�The chill has intensified because of the strong flow of the dry north-westerly. The cold wave prevailing in large parts of northern India is also adding to the crispness of weather in Jharkhand. The condition will stay for another 48 hours ,� said the duty officer at Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore, Calcutta.
