PM Modi to Address Lok Sabha on West Asia Crisis

New Delhi (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the Lok Sabha at 2 p.m. today to discuss critical concerns regarding the ongoing West Asia conflict.

On Sunday, the Prime Minister chaired a high-level meeting to review the petroleum, crude oil, gas, power, and fertilizer sectors. He focused on ensuring uninterrupted supplies and stable distribution as the West Asia crisis evolves. During the session, the Prime Minister prioritized maintaining stable logistics and streamlining national distribution systems to protect essential services.

Officials briefed the Prime Minister on current fuel availability and the specific steps they are taking to safeguard India’s energy security. Sources indicate the government is closely monitoring global developments and implementing proactive measures to shield consumers and industries from international market volatility. Currently, the administration is building adequate reserves and strengthening supply chains to counter rising geopolitical uncertainties.

This review comes as the West Asia conflict puts global energy markets on edge. The region plays a decisive role in global oil and gas supplies, and disruptions in key shipping routes—particularly the Strait of Hormuz—threaten a significant share of global energy trade.

A day earlier, Prime Minister Modi spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss regional stability. He emphasized the urgent need for peace and urged all parties to keep international shipping lanes open and secure to protect global supply chains.

To reduce Middle East dependence, India has diversified its energy portfolio by increasing oil and gas purchases from the United States, Russia, and African nations like Nigeria. Officials confirmed that nearly 70 percent of India’s oil imports now arrive from sources outside the Gulf region. Additionally, the government has boosted efforts to manage LPG supplies, including sourcing gas from the US. While concerns over LPG availability persist, officials report no consumer-level disruptions and note a significant rise in online bookings.
