Chainpur records highest rainfall at 204 mm in Jharkhand

Jamshedpur: Monsoon activity continued its strong grip over Jharkhand in the past 24 hours, bringing widespread rainfall and thunderstorms to various districts across the state. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), most regions experienced light to moderate rainfall, while a few isolated pockets recorded heavy to very heavy showers.

The most significant rainfall was observed in Chainpur in Palamu district, which emerged as the wettest location during the ongoing spell with a remarkable 204.0 mm of rainfall. This intense downpour has raised water levels in several low-lying areas and brought much-needed relief from the dry conditions experienced earlier this month.

While the rain brought respite from the heat, it also disrupted normal life in certain areas due to waterlogging, traffic delays, and power outages. The IMD noted that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning were reported from several locations, underlining the volatile nature of the current monsoon phase.

Temperature variations across the state also reflected the impact of the weather system. The maximum temperature was recorded at 33.3°C in Seraikela, while Latehar reported the lowest minimum temperature of 21.0°C, indicating cooler conditions in the rain-affected districts.

Meteorological experts highlighted that a well-marked low-pressure area remains active over southwest Bihar and adjoining eastern Uttar Pradesh. This system, along with an associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level, is significantly influencing the monsoon pattern over Jharkhand and nearby regions.

The monsoon trough at mean sea level has now extended from northwest Rajasthan to the northeast Bay of Bengal, passing through major centres including Gwalior, southwest Bihar, east Uttar Pradesh, and parts of West Bengal. This extended trough is helping funnel moisture-laden winds into the state, enhancing rainfall activity.

The IMD has issued an alert for thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places across Jharkhand for today and urged citizens to remain cautious. “People should avoid taking shelter under trees and stay indoors during lightning activity. Farmers are also advised to take necessary precautions while working in the fields,” the IMD advisory stated.

In urban centres like Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, and Bokaro, intermittent showers were reported throughout the day, offering relief from heat but also causing inconvenience during peak commuting hours. Rural areas, especially in western and north-central parts of the state, saw heavier rain with temporary road blockages and swollen streams.
