Call to reconsider power tariff hike in Jharkhand

Jamshedpur, March 26: The recent decision by the Jharkhand State Electricity Regulatory Commission ( JSERC ) to increase electricity tariffs for domestic consumers has sparked sharp criticism, with political voices calling it both unfortunate and anti-people.
Subodh Srivastava, District President of the Janata Dal (United) in East Singhbhum, has strongly opposed the move, urging the state government to immediately review and roll back the hike.
Expressing concern over the growing financial burden on citizens, Srivastava said that the increase of 55 paise per unit—raising the rate to Rs 7.40 per unit—will significantly impact middle-class and economically weaker households.
He emphasized that at a time when inflation is already straining household budgets, such decisions only exacerbate the difficulties faced by the common man.
“People are already struggling to meet their daily needs amid rising prices. Imposing an additional burden in the form of increased electricity tariffs is neither justified nor sensitive to public concerns,” he said.
According to him, the move reflects a disconnect between policy decisions and ground realities, particularly for urban families whose monthly electricity consumption often exceeds subsidized limits.
While acknowledging the state government’s provision of free electricity up to 200 units, Srivastava pointed out that this benefit offers limited relief in practical terms. “Most urban households consume more than 200 units per month, meaning they will inevitably bear the brunt of the revised tariffs,” he noted. This, he argued, undermines the intended relief measures and leaves a large section of consumers exposed to higher costs.
He further urged the government to prioritize public welfare by introducing measures that ease financial pressure rather than intensify it. Calling for a more balanced and empathetic approach, Srivastava stressed that governance should focus on providing relief, especially during economically challenging times.
The JD(U) leader also issued a warning, stating that if the decision is not reconsidered, the party will be compelled to launch a public movement in the interest of the people. He reiterated that access to affordable electricity is a basic necessity, and any policy affecting it must be carefully evaluated with the welfare of citizens in mind.
The demand for a rollback highlights growing public concern over rising utility costs and sets the stage for a potential political confrontation if the issue remains unresolved.
