Jamshedpur, Sep 19: Brahmananda Narayana Multispeciality Hospital in Jamshedpur is one of the few centers in Jharkhand, which has the expertise and the readiness to perform an emergency angioplasty, called as Primary Angioplasty on a patient when he has got a heart attack.
The hospital on an average performs 12 to 15 such cases in a month. A panel of doctors today announced this while introducing Dr. Indrani Shyam, Consultant Cardiologist.
Primary Angioplasty is a procedure to unblock an artery carrying blood to the heart. For the treatment to work it has to be done quickly within the golden hour to minimize the amount of damage to the heart muscle from the lack of oxygen that occurs when blood flow is blocked.
Dr. Abhay Krishna, consultant interventional cardiologist, Brahmananda Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, said, The first 60 minutes in a Heart Attack is considered as the Golden Hour, as quick and timely help rendered in this period will ensure the victim is nearly saved. Thus, Primary Angioplasty, an emergency lifesaving procedure is directly performed by opening up the blocked artery that causes the attack within that time-period.
This is a very crucial procedure that is aimed at opening up the occlusion causing artery that had led to heart attack. When a patient collapses with a heart attack, rather than panicking, it is important that the individual is provided with immediate basic medical attention with in the Golden Hour – first 60 minutes of the heart attack. Emergency Procedures such as Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) can be performed in an effort to manually preserve intact brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing during cardiac arrest.
To make the general public aware of this, the hospital also offers regular training programs on CPR.
