Crematorium committee members and staff meet DC to demand security

Jamshedpur, July 17: Cremation work at the Parvati Ghat crematorium situated at Bistupur was completely stalled on the third consecutive day here today as the burning ghat staff refused to take bodies in protest of the murder of their manager, Sarojit Sarkar. Sarkar was butchered by a former staff of the crematorium over an old grudge related to the latters removal from job several months ago.

In view of the murder, a delegation comprising staff and members of Parvati Ghat Management Committee met the deputy commissioner of East Singhbhum, Amit Kumar, today and demanded security on the crematorium precincts. The officials said the crematorium work will not resume till security was tightened there by the district administration.

After hearing the grievances of the crematorium committee members and staff, the DC assured to take necessary steps to meet their demands. The DC asked them to resume work since it was causing much inconvenience to the public.

Sources said the agitated staff today turned away six bodies that had been brought to the crematorium while today too they refused several bodies to cremate. The gatekeeper, D Gopal Rao, asked people to take bodies for cremation to Subernarekha Burning Ghat in Sakchi instead.

Ever since the day of murder, the Parvati Ghat staff locked the crematorium’s gate.

“We are shocked by our managers murder in broad daylight. Ironically, no step has been taken by the police to nab those involved. We will continue our protest unless we are provided adequate security at the crematorium. Police must nail the associates of the prime accused, Bharat Gaur,” said one of the protesters.

It may be mentioned that the accused, Bharat, slit open the throat of Sarkar (56) on Saturday, while the victim was working at his office. The assailant (27) who used to stay adjoining the burning ghat was arrested immediately.
But, the protesting staff are pressing the police to arrest all those involved in the murder. They said that people with vested interests were involved behind the act. “We want to know whether there were any more assailants behind the murder of Sarkar. We also demand security,” another staff noted.

After the protest following the manager’s murder, the people have to take the bodies for cremation to Subernarekha Burning Ghat. They have no choice but to go to Subernarekha Burning Ghat.

Incidentally, due to suspension of cremation at Parvati Burning Ghat, there is a rush of bodies for cremation at the Subernarekha Burning Ghat. A total 21 bodies were cremated at the Sakchi-based burning ghat on Sunday. There are only two burning ghats in Jamshedpur, one in Bistupur and the other at Sakchi.

The officer in-charge of Jugsalai thana, Laxman Paswan, said, There was no other assailant involved in the murder. We have carried detailed investigation and we can say that Bharat Gaur was the only assailant. As he was sacked by the crematorium management a year ago and took the step out of revenge.
