Jamshedpur, May 13: Residents of Mango and adjoining areas have been facing a severe water crisis as the construction of a semi-finished water tank, started five and a half years ago has not yet been completed. The tank which is being built on forest department land next to the UCO Bank in Mango was initiated with a cost of Rs 13 crore 83 lakh and is still only half-finished.

In response to the delay, locals, led by BJP leader Vikas Singh protested at the work site demanding immediate action. Singh criticized the lack of progress stating that the construction of the tank had surpassed the famous Indian folktale of Birbal’s Khichdi in terms of its duration.

The tank’s construction was originally initiated by the then minister local MLA Saryu Rai and MP Vidyut Varan Mahato. However, since the local MLA Banna Gupta won the election three and a half years ago, he has not visited the site or taken any action on the slow progress of construction.

The tank was designed to supply water to several areas, including Post Office Road, Gurudwara Road, Kunwar Basti, Daiguttu, Paras Nagar, Gaur Basti, Chatai Colony, Prahlad Nagar, Krishna Nagar, Vaikunth Nagar, Chunasah Colony, and Ulidih. Due to the delay in construction, the areas are experiencing severe water shortages forcing residents to resort to purchasing water or drawing from the river drain for their daily needs.

Similarly, the second tank, which is intended to be built in Sukhna Basti of Baliguma has also faced significant delays leaving residents in the Gokul Nagar, Sukhna Basti, Baliguma, Bagan area, Turiyabeda, Dharma Bandha, and Dhara Basti without access to clean water. BJP leader Vikas Singh promised to inform the Secretary of the Urban Development Department and Drinking Water Sanitation Department about the issue and if progress is not made soon, demonstrations will be organized at the construction site. Many locals, including Santosh Singh Chauhan, Vinay Kumar, Shubham Raj, Api Dutta, Mohammad Nisar Ahmed, Raju Munda, Ram Singh Kushwaha, Mohammad Karim, Dharmapal Singh, and Rohit Kumar also expressed their concerns over the issue.
