Tight race in Jharkhand assembly polls as NDA and INDI Alliance

Jamshedpur, Nov 12: The political landscape in Jharkhand is heating up as the state prepares for the first phase of assembly elections on November 13. A total of 43 assembly constituencies will go to the polls in this phase, with 685 candidates competing for voters’ favor. These constituencies represent the voices of 1.37 crore voters, who will soon determine the fate of the competing candidates and the future of the state’s leadership. Just six months ago, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had an impressive showing, leading in 25 of these 43 constituencies, while the Grand Alliance, comprising parties such as the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Congress, was ahead in 18.
This assembly election, however, is expected to differ from the national parliamentary polls, as voting patterns for state elections often reflect distinct local issues and sentiments. Political analysts are predicting a fierce battle between the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Grand Alliance, known as the Indi Alliance. Independent candidates have added complexity to the competition, with a three-way contest emerging in various seats.
Constituency-wise vote distribution
In Jamshedpur East, a high-stakes constituency, a significant 1.93 lakh votes were cast, with the BJP garnering 1.35 lakh votes compared to the JMM’s 40,000 votes in the Lok Sabha polls. Neighboring Jamshedpur West saw a similar scenario, with the BJP securing 1.33 lakh of the 2.18 lakh votes, leaving the JMM trailing with 77,000 votes.
Key constituencies and voting trends
Jugsalai: Of the 2.46 lakh votes cast, BJP received 1.39 lakh while JMM received 83,000.
Potka: Here, BJP led with 1.11 lakh votes out of 2.27 lakh, and JMM followed closely with 99,000.
Ghatsila: A tight race unfolded with BJP winning 88,000 votes and JMM slightly behind at 87,000.
Baharagora: BJP led with 1 lakh votes, while JMM secured 72,000 of the 1.89 lakh total votes.
Seraikela: BJP maintained an edge with 1.18 lakh votes out of 2.61 lakh, while JMM got 98,000.
Kharsawan: Here, Congress edged out BJP with 90,000 votes against BJP’s 74,000.
Tribal and rural constituencies
In areas like Chaibasa, JMM took the lead with 1 lakh votes, leaving BJP with 45,000. Similarly, in Majhgaon, JMM again dominated with 95,000 out of 1.52 lakh votes. Jagannathpur followed this trend, with JMM receiving 70,000 votes against BJP’s 49,000. In Manoharpur and Chakradharpur, JMM led with 76,000 and 71,000 votes, respectively, leaving BJP trailing.
Urban strongholds and key battlegrounds
In the state capital Ranchi, BJP held a significant lead with 1.11 lakh votes, while Congress garnered 80,000. The situation was mirrored in Hazaribagh, where BJP received 1.53 lakh votes to Congress’s 88,000. Other notable constituencies include Simaria (BJP 1.4 lakh, Congress 66,000), Chatra (BJP 1.43 lakh, Congress 76,000), and Koderma, where BJP dominated with 1.6 lakh votes compared to CPI-ML’s 62,000.
The Grand Alliance showed strength in constituencies like Mandar (Congress 1.31 lakh against BJP’s 82,000) and Sisai (Congress 88,000 to BJP’s 62,000). Tamar and Torpa followed similar trends, with Congress leading over BJP by notable margins.
With November 23 slated as the date for result announcements, candidates across the state are leaving no stone unturned in their campaign efforts. The battle is tight, and the presence of strong independent candidates has created unexpected twists in various constituencies, potentially changing the outcome for both the NDA and the Indi Alliance. The upcoming results will reveal whether the BJP can sustain its lead in assembly constituencies or if the Grand Alliance can make inroads in the state legislative landscape.
