Apollo Gleneagies Hospitals announces pioneering cardiac surgeries

Jamshedpur, April 10: Apollo Gleneagies Hospitals (AGH), Kolkata, the leader in the delivery of cutting-edge medical services in eastern India, has pioneered the introduction of several innovative treatment options.

The hospital is known for its highly specialized centres of excellence, which bring together the latest curative solutions and the best specialists under one roof to deliver a comprehensive cure to its legions of satisfied patients.

AGH’s Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery is equipped with three Digital Catheterization Laboratories, and is backed by CT Angiography, nuclear medicine and 128-slice PET CT equipment. The department also has a 3D EP lab (for permanent treatment of arrhythmias) and OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) and iVUS (Intravascular ultrasound) machines that allow for a state-of-the-art diagnosis and cure.

The surgical team, under the expert guidance of Dr Sushan Mukhopadhyay, senior consultant, director and head of the department of Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery, Apollo Gleneagies Hospitals, Kolkata, regularly carries out such critical and complicated procedures like minimally invasive Cardiothoracic surgery, beating heart bypass surgery and total arterial bypass surgery, a press communiqu issued by the hospital stated.

Dr Mukhopadhyay and his team recently successfully completed two major cardiac procedures. In the first instance, they carried out a mitral valve replacement on a 61-year-old lady from Jamshedpur. She had been admitted with severe valvular disease and was judged as being a high risk case for full blown open heart surgery.

The minimally invasive route was selected following investigations and an evaluation of the parameters as noted before the surgery. A small cut (1.5 inch) was made below her right breast, allowing for the diseased valve to be replaced in a short period of time. The patient recovered within a very short period of time, and is doing rather well.

The second case is a testimony to the skill and expertise of the team at AGH. The patient, a 58 year old man with a severe acute coronary syndrome, had a minor heart attack, and was suffering from severe double vessel disease. Dr Mukhopadhyay led his team in a bilateral internal mammary artery CABG (coronary artery bypass grafting) procedure, which involved the creation of three different grafts.

He observed, “The procedure involved making a small, two inch cut on the left side of the chest. While most procedures in vogue use CABG with single mammary artery and vein grafts from the leg, this time the team used both the mammary arteries from the chest, constructing two grafts using the two mammary arteries and one more graft using a saphenous vein.

This double internal mammary artery grafting is known as the gold standard in coronary artery surgery, and has shown a significant result in the treatment of patients. The use of minimally invasive procedures also ensures reduced blood loss, minimized hospital stay and fastest recovery.”
