Amity Varsity Jharkhand, OPPO hosts e-waste awareness drive

Ranchi, September 19: OPPO India, in partnership with the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), has extended the second leg of their ‘Generation Green’ campaign to Amity University Jharkhand (AUJ).

This nationwide electronic-waste (e-waste) awareness drive recognizes Amity University Jharkhand, as an ‘Eco-Conscious Champion Institute’ under the programme. As part of the first leg, OPPO India and AICTE promoted green skills among youth by offering internships across colleges in India.

Over 9,000 students from over 1,400 institutions applied for these internships, and 5,000 were selected.

The second leg educates youth about the increasing challenge of electronic waste management, including disposing discarded wires, mobile phones, chargers, and batteries, to ensure a sustainable future.

The ceremony at Amity University Jharkhand had vice chancellor of Amity University, Ashok Kumar Srivastava, additional PCCF Yatinder Kumar Das, IFS as the Chief Guest.

The students from Amity University Jharkhand and neighbouring schools were actively engaged in a diverse range of activities—such as Nukkad Natak, poster-making competitions, best-out-of-waste crafts, and other performances—to raise awareness about the responsible management of e-waste.

The campaign aims to reach 10 lakh youth by the end of 2024, promoting green skills through awareness sessions, Green Pledges, and e-surveys.

Ashok Kumar Srivastava, reaffirmed the institution’s dedication to sustainability.

“We are proud to be recognized as an Eco Conscious Champion Institute; under OPPO India’s ‘Generation Green’ campaign. This event reinforces our commitment to nurturing environmental responsibility in our students, empowering them to take a leading role in the fight against e-waste and promoting sustainable practices for the future,” said Srivastava.

He further announced, “In addition to the e-waste awareness drive, Amity University Jharkhand, in collaboration with OPPO India, has inaugurated a Centre of Excellence for Tribal Research and Entrepreneurship. This Centre of Excellence will provide tribal communities with training, resources, and mentorship to help them build sustainable businesses while preserving their cultural heritage.”

K. Das, emphasized the critical role of proper e-waste management in safeguarding environmental health and public well-being.

According to the United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD) report, India experienced the highest global growth in electronic waste generation—163 percent—between 2010 and 2022, primarily from screens, computers, and small IT and telecommunication equipment (SCSIT).
