Jamshedpur: With the announcement of polling date (November 11) for Ghatshila (ST) assembly area, the seat is heading for an interesting fight between the ruling JMM party and the BJP.
Political observers believe that the upcoming bypoll could serve as a litmus test for the ruling alliance JMM-led INDIA bloc’s grassroots connect and its ability to maintain voter confidence amidst shifting regional equations.
The ruling government in the State exudes confidence ahead of the upcoming Ghatshila assembly by-election, asserting that it is well-placed to retain the seat despite having yet to announce its official candidate.
Sources within the alliance indicated that the ruling combine is likely to follow the same strategy it had successfully adopted during previous bypolls held under Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s earlier tenure (2019–24)—that of nominating a family member of the deceased MLA to consolidate sympathy votes and ensure an easy win.
According to insiders, the late MLA Ramdas Soren’s son, Somesh Soren, is the frontrunner to be nominated as the INDIA bloc’s candidate from Ghatshila. The move, if confirmed, would be in keeping with the JMM’s long-standing practice of reinforcing family legacies in traditional strongholds, a formula that has often worked to its electoral advantage in tribal-dominated constituencies.
A senior leader of JMM confirmed that the party’s central committee meeting on October 15 will finalise and announce the official candidate. “Having said and done, we are set to retain the seat. We are fully confident about it,” he asserted, adding that the party’s grassroots connect and developmental record would ensure a comfortable margin.
Meanwhile, the BJP-led NDA has also kept its cards close to its chest, refraining from a formal announcement of its candidate. However, party insiders revealed that Babulal Soren, son of former chief minister and sitting Seraikela MLA Champai Soren, is expected to once again enter the fray.
Babulal, who had contested the seat in the 2024 assembly elections and lost to the late Ramdas Soren by a wide margin, has already intensified ground-level campaigning in the region. Both Babulal and his father Champai Soren have been actively touring villages and engaging with local tribal leaders over the past few weeks in a bid to rebuild the party’s support base.
Party strategists within the BJP believe that a renewed focus on tribal welfare schemes and local infrastructure issues could help bridge the vote gap that had widened during the last election. “The people are disillusioned with the ruling coalition’s false promises. This time, the mood on the ground is different,” said a senior BJP functionary, hinting at a possible reversal of fortunes.
The Ghatshila seat holds symbolic importance for both the JMM and BJP. While the JMM views it as a bastion of loyalty and continuity, the BJP considers it an opportunity to make inroads into the Kolhan tribal belt, where it has struggled to gain traction.
Notably, in the 2024 assembly polls, the BJP-led NDA managed to win only one of the 28 tribal reserved (ST) constituencies—Seraikela—underscoring the JMM’s continued dominance in tribal regions.
With both camps stepping up mobilisation efforts and deploying top leadership for campaign strategies, Ghatshila is set to witness an intense but familiar electoral battle, one that could reaffirm existing loyalties or subtly reshape political narratives in Jharkhand’s tribal heartland.
