In a significant move to mitigate human-elephant conflict, the Forest Department is turning to cutting-edge technology. Work has officially begun to install 26 Artificial Intelligence (AI) cameras across elephant-prone zones in Dalma, Chakulia, and Chandil.
According to forest officials, these smart cameras will keep a 24-hour vigil on elephant movements.
How the AI System Works
- Instant Detection: The moment an elephant enters the range of an AI camera, the system automatically activates.
- Early Warning: A siren will trigger immediately, alerting nearby villagers and the forest department team well in advance.
- Night Vision Capability: The cameras are fully equipped to function effectively in pitch-black conditions, ensuring round-the-clock safety for both humans and elephants.
Installation Locations
The high-tech cameras are being strategically deployed across several vulnerable pockets:
- Chakulia Forest Area: Rajabasa, Jamua, Machadiha, Jamua, Kalsimungu, and Purnapani.
- Chandil Area: Kuku, Neemdih, Kusputul, Anda, and other surrounding villages.
- Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary: The cameras will monitor key movement corridors used by the elephants.
To facilitate this, the department is constructing 40-foot-high towers to securely mount the AI equipment.
“AI cameras are being installed in Dalma, Chakulia, and Chandil. This will enable accurate monitoring of elephants and will significantly help in preventing human-wildlife conflict.”
