Jamshedpur: Tata Steel Tribal Cultural Society (TCS) organised a closing ceremony for the first batch of residential matric coaching programme students at Tribal Culture Centre, Sonari, on May 13th, 2014.
A total of 34 students were felicitated by Suresh Dutt Tripathi, VP (HRM), Tata Steel, who graced the occasion as the chief guest. Further, he also encouraged the students with his inspirational words. Biren Bhuta, Chief, CSR, Tata Steel, and Urmila Ekka, honorary Secretary, TCS, along with the staff of TCS were present at the function to celebrate this occasion of triumph.
Out of 44 students who had appeared for Class-10 final examination of Jharkhand Academic Council, 34 successfully passed the examination, of which 1 secured first division and 17 of them secured second division. These students hail from East Singhbhum, West Singbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan districts.
These students in their previous attempts were unable to clear the Class-10 examination. During the 8-months residential coaching programme, offered by TCS, they underwent the preparatory course for the 2013-14 matric examination. Five teachers provided intensive training to the students. For overall development, the residential programme also included sessions on personality development and sports.
These students were selected and supported by the TCS for the residential coaching programme in collaboration with the Tribal Research and Training Centre, Chaibasa. TCS took care of their expenditure towards boarding and lodging as well as bore the administrative costs and salaries of teachers.
Many students from weak financial background drop out of the academic mainstream as they are unable to pass the examination of class 10. To enable them to get back into the academic stream, and make them eligible for better career opportunities, the Tata Steel Tribal Culture Society has facilitated a residential coaching program in collaboration with Tribal Research and Training Centre, Chaibasa since July 2013.
The intervention also reaffirms Tata Steels commitment to the welfare and growth of SC and ST communities as part of its Affirmative Action strategy.
