Patna (IANS): In a landmark political shift, Nitish Kumar resigned as the Chief Minister of Bihar on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. His departure officially concludes a leadership era that defined the state’s governance for nearly 20 years.
Kumar, who recently secured a seat in the Rajya Sabha, visited the Raj Bhavan in Patna to formally submit his resignation to Governor Syed Ata Hasnain. The Governor accepted the resignation, effectively closing the “Nitish Era” and clearing the path for a new administration.
Reflecting on a Legacy of Development
Following his resignation, Nitish Kumar shared a detailed message on X (formerly Twitter), tracing his journey back to November 24, 2005, when he first formed the NDA government. He highlighted several key pillars of his administration:
-
Social Empowerment: He emphasized targeted initiatives for women, youth, Dalits, Mahadalits, and backward classes.
-
Infrastructure & Services: He noted significant progress in healthcare, education, road connectivity, electricity, and agriculture.
-
Law and Order: Kumar pointed to the strengthening of the state’s legal framework as a core achievement.
Roadmap for the Future
Despite stepping down, Kumar spoke optimistically about Bihar’s trajectory. He pointed to the ‘7 Nishchay-3’ initiative—the NDA’s roadmap for 2025–2030—as the framework that will transform Bihar into a leading contributor to India’s national growth.
He also extended his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Central government for their consistent cooperation in the state’s development journey.
A New Chapter in National Politics
Nitish Kumar confirmed that he reached the decision to step down prior to his final Cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning. While he now shifts his focus to the national stage in Delhi, he assured the people of Bihar that the incoming state government would receive his full cooperation and guidance.
Concluding his message, Kumar expressed heartfelt thanks to the citizens and his colleagues for their nearly two decades of support. His transition signals a defining moment in Bihar’s history, moving the state into a new phase of governance under the BJP-led NDA.
