2 Jharkhand MLAs suspended ahead of monsoon session

Ranchi, July 25: The Jharkhand Assembly Speaker’s Tribunal disqualified two legislators on Thursday under the anti-defection law, effective from July 26, according to an official statement.

The order came just before the start of the assembly’s six-day monsoon session, which begins on Friday.

The disqualified legislators are Lobin Hembrom of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Jai Prakash Bhai Patel of the BJP.

Proceedings were initiated against Hembrom by the JMM and against Patel by the BJP under the anti-defection law.

Hembrom was disqualified for contesting independently from the Rajmahal Lok Sabha seat, challenging the JMM’s official candidate, Vijay Hansdak. While Jai Prakash Patel joined the Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha polls and contested from the Hazaribag seat against party’s official candidate Manish Jaiwal. Both were defeated in the elections.

Assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahto delivered the judgment, disqualifying both legislators from the House after two-days of hearing and on studying the written replies of both the MLAs.

Jharkhand Assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahto on Thursday convened an all-party meeting to ensure the smooth functioning of the House during the upcoming Monsoon session, scheduled to commence on July 26 and conclude on August 2.

This session marks the final assembly gathering before the state heads into elections later this year.

Present at the meeting were Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Minister Rameshwar Oraon, AJSU Party legislator Lambodar Mahto, and CPI(ML) Liberation legislator Vinod Singh.

However, the BJP was notably absent, with Speaker Mahto mentioning that Ranchi MLA CP Singh arrived late, speculating that he might have been designated as the party’s representative.
