Jamshedpur: Hundreds of women of Baldev Basti in Jugsalai have started an anti-liquor campaign in the locality with the view to prevent crimes and domestic violence. They claim support of the Jugsalai MLA Ramchandra Sahis.
On Monday, the MLA reached the locality and assured to support the cause taken up by the women. Local women told the legislator they had recently forced several illegal distilleries to close down. Liquor mafia members attacked a woman with blade and also threatened to kill her after the incident, said the agitating women.
The campaigners said alcoholism was taking a toll on many families. A good number of men spend all their earnings on liquor. After drinking, they subject their family members to atrocities, said the women.
Many AJSU leaders and supporters were present at Baldev Basti today. They said they will themselves demolish the illegal liquor dens in case the police fail to take timely action against the culprits.
Those present included district AJSU president Kanhaiyya Singh, Manik Mallik, Vicky Sonkar and Ankush Sahani.
