Kolkata (IANS): The Alipore Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) warns of a wet start to the week as a cyclonic circulation brings rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds to West Bengal. While the entire state will see activity, North Bengal faces the brunt of the weather system.
North Bengal on High Alert
Forecasters expect heavy rainfall to lash five specific districts through Monday, March 16. Residents in these areas should prepare for significant downpours:
-
Darjeeling & Kalimpong
-
Jalpaiguri & Alipurduar
-
Cooch Behar
The Met office notes that these conditions, ranging in intensity, will likely persist in the northern region until Wednesday.
South Bengal and Kolkata Forecast
While South Bengal will avoid the heaviest deluges, unstable weather will continue across the region.
-
Sunday Update: Rainfall intensity will pick up in East and West Burdwan, Nadia, Murshidabad, Purulia, Bankura, and Birbhum.
-
Wind & Lightning: Expect gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 km/h alongside frequent lightning strikes. This advisory remains active until Tuesday.
-
Kolkata: The city will experience scattered showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures remain slightly above average, with a recent minimum of 26.02°C (3.6 degrees above normal).
Why is the weather changing?
A met department official explained that a cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh and Gangetic West Bengal is driving the shift. Although the system has weakened slightly, an active low-pressure trough continues to pull significant moisture inland from the Bay of Bengal.
