We need to discover students� inner talent: Loyola principal Father Pius Fernandes

Loyola School focuses on better interaction with parents and students

Jamshedpur , Nov. 19 : Father Pius Fernandes, who has taken over the realm of Loyola School as the principal for the second term, has said that the need of the hour is to discover hidden talent of the students. He said that the school has framed its education in a way that would help a child to showcase its inner strength and make him a responsible citizen.

Sharing his experiences as the principal of the leading school of the state, Father Pius said that he has served as principal of Loyola from 1992-2002 but now feel humbled to be back to the school.

�Honestly speaking education is more than just scoring marks. I believe in making every child capable to be a responsible citizen and contribute in nation�s progress,� said Father Pius with a smile.

He further noted that not just precisely the classroom education of the children is on the agenda but broader issues like, brotherhood, talentand confidence building is part of the spectrum.

Father Pius is also known for winning National Teachers Award 2005. The award is given to teachers selected from across the nation for their �contribution to the development of the country through education�. He received the award from the then President of India, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, at the VigyanBhavan, New Delhi on September 5, 2006.Dr.Kalam, himself a great scientist and a teacher, honored Fr. Pius for his great work and dedication.

In order to ensure parents continued active involvement in the school activities and bridge the gap if any between parents and teachers of the school, the Loyola School is also focussing on better interaction with parents.

The principal, who recently presided over an open house interaction with parents of both junior and senior sections, said that regular feedbacks are often taken from the parents and the suggestions given by them are given serious consideration. Based on one such suggestion given by a majority of the parents, the school has started a formal interactive session with the parents.

Father Pius inherited his love of teaching from his parents. His father, late Rosario Fernandes, was the headmaster of a school, and his mother, Dulcine Fernandes, had rendered services as teacher. Fr Pius had his schooling in St Mary’s School at Kundapur and higher secondary from St. Aloysius College, Mangalore.

He joined the Jesuit order in 1971 and graduated from St. Xaviers College, Ahmedabad. He went on to do earn his post graduate degree from Pune University. Fr. Fernandes has served as vice-principal of St. Joseph’s College, Darjeeling before his stint at Loyola.
