Water crisis in Jamshedpur’s Bagbera set to ease with installation of 70 new hand pumps

Jamshedpur, April 12: A comprehensive plan has been devised to address the prevailing water scarcity in the Bagbera area through the installation of new hand pumps. Following the conclusion of the election code of conduct, hand pumps are slated for installation across every panchayat. Approval has been secured from the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department, marking a crucial step forward in resolving the water crisis.

Under the leadership of the Chief, an ambitious initiative has been launched to ensure the installation of a hand pump in each panchayat of Bagbera. The Drinking Water Department has directed the Block Head to identify suitable locations and submit a report accordingly. Notably, the drilling depth for new hand pumps will be increased to 500 feet, a significant enhancement from the previous 200 feet, ensuring better access to groundwater.

The initiative aims to alleviate the water woes of thousands of residents in the panchayat area, especially considering the more than 150 hand pumps that have dried up. This issue, highlighted in Hindustan’s April 3 publication, underscores the urgency of the situation. Currently, approximately 30,000 residents rely on tanker water supply, with tankers dispatched every fourth day to cater to their needs.

Panchayat Samiti member Sunil Gupta emphasized the importance of assessing groundwater levels prior to hand pump installation to ensure sustained water availability. Additionally, arrangements for rising pumps will be made to prevent rapid depletion.

Executive Engineer Sunil Kumar of the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department assured that funds have been allocated annually for hand pump installation during summers. With the election code of conduct soon to be lifted, the installation process will commence promptly, targeting areas where funds have been sanctioned. This concerted effort promises tangible relief for Bagbera residents grappling with water scarcity.
