Garbage dumping halted at Sonari Marine Drive, disposal crisis hits Mango
Mail News Service
Jamshedpur, Dec 14: In response to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) ruling, the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) and Mango Municipal Corporation have ceased the dumping of garbage at the Sonari Marine Drive. Previously, up to 150 to 200 tons of waste were being discarded daily at this site. This action followed a petition raised by local MLA Saryu Roy, who highlighted the environmental damage caused by the garbage dump, especially the ongoing fire and pollution issues.

The NGT directed the Jharkhand Pollution Control Board and the district administration to take immediate action to put out the fire at the Sonari garbage dump and mitigate the pollution resulting from the accumulation of waste. In response, the dumping was halted, but this has led to a new and pressing issue: the question of where to dispose of the vast amount of garbage generated daily.
While the Mango Municipal Corporation had earmarked one acre of land in Betakocha for disposal purposes, local villagers have strongly opposed this plan, preventing the garbage from being dumped there. On Friday, the corporation attempted to use an alternate site in Dimna, but local protests again thwarted these efforts, resulting in garbage left stranded in the vehicles.
Meanwhile, in Jamshedpur’s notified area, waste disposal has been redirected to Sidhgora CRM Bara, a site where Tata Steel UISL also disposes of its waste. Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) has received permission to continue dumping garbage there. However, with the ongoing protests in Mango and limited options for disposal, the situation is becoming increasingly critical for the Mango Municipal Corporation.
The waste management crisis in Mango could escalate further if a solution is not found promptly. Garbage collection in the area is already at risk of being halted, as the vehicles used for waste collection are now filled and unable to unload their contents due to the lack of available dumping sites. The delay in finding a resolution poses a serious challenge to the city’s waste management system and environmental health.
