Jharkhand Makes Global Debut: First Amrapali Mango Consignment Exported to UK

New Delhi (IANS): In a major boost to agricultural exports from Jharkhand, the Ministry of Commerce & Industry announced on Sunday that officials have flagged off the state’s first commercial consignment of fresh mangoes to the United Kingdom under an initiative that the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) supported.

Organizers held the export flag-off ceremony in Kolkata on June 4, 2026, marking a significant milestone for farmer-producer groups in Jharkhand.

The consignment contains 1.5 metric tonnes of fresh Amrapali mangoes, which the Beura Farmer Producer Company Ltd.—an all-women farmer producer company based in the Bano Block of Simdega district—sourced for the shipment.

Exporters M/s JGB Agrofresh Pvt. Ltd. are shipping the cargo to London. The company partnered with the women’s farmer group through APEDA’s direct facilitation.

This development follows an export-oriented capacity-building programme that APEDA conducted on May 5, 2026, in the Simdega district.

During the programme, experts trained Farmer Producer Companies, Farmer Producer Organisations, and progressive farmers on export requirements, quality standards, and global market opportunities.

Following the training, APEDA successfully created a direct link between Beura Farmer Producer Company Ltd. and M/s JGB Agrofresh Pvt. Ltd. to procure export-quality mangoes.

This collaboration successfully integrated local farmers into the agricultural export value chain for the first time.

Officials noted that farmers associated with the producer company are already earning better returns compared to prevailing domestic market prices.

Experts also expect the initiative to encourage better farming practices in the region, including improved post-harvest handling, strict quality assurance, and compliance with international standards.

Agricultural experts recognize Jharkhand, with its highly favourable agro-climatic conditions, as a promising region for horticulture cultivation.

The Amrapali mango variety grown in the state boasts exceptional quality and is gaining widespread market acceptance in both domestic and international markets.
