Chandil: Frustrated villagers blocked a road for approximately six hours near Khairvan, situated on the Silli-Rangamati road within the Ichagarh block area of Chandil sub-division, to protest against the persistent issue of wild elephants. The road blockade led to long lines of vehicles forming on both sides of the road as local residents demanded a community-driven solution to the elephant problem. The villagers expressed their grievances, stating that each year, during the paddy ripening season, a herd of wild elephants descends upon the area, causing extensive damage by consuming and trampling the crops. During this period, the elephant herds also pose risks to lives and property.
Reports indicate that a group of 40-42 elephants has established a camp in the Pilid, Raghunathpur, and Khedhwan forests. These elephants venture into fields at dusk, feasting on ripe paddy crops. To safeguard their homes, villagers are compelled to remain vigilant through the night.
Local women shared their concerns, noting that the Forest Department does not provide timely compensation for losses incurred, including paddy crops. Furthermore, the compensation amount falls short of adequately covering the damages. The presence of the 42-elephant herd in the Pilid forest area has exacerbated the situation, with villagers staying awake at night to protect their homes and properties while the elephants continue to ravage the fields. In this context, the only viable solution lies in safely relocating the wild elephants back to their natural habitat. The villagers are adamant about finding a permanent resolution to the elephant menace.
