New Delhi, Jan 5: The Vande Bharat sleeper train has set a new benchmark in Indian rail travel, achieving a maximum speed of 180 kmph during successful trials conducted in the Kota Division of Rajasthan. These trials, under the supervision of the Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO) began on January 1, 2025 and will continue throughout the month. The train achieved its peak speed over multiple sections, including Kota-Laban and Rohal Khurd-Kota. A stable travel experience was demonstrated, with even a glass of water remaining undisturbed at high speeds, showcasing unparalleled comfort and stability.
Designed to transform long-distance rail travel, the Vande Bharat sleeper train boasts features such as automatic doors, Wi-Fi connectivity, aircraft-inspired interiors and extremely comfortable berths. The train’s conversion to sleeper coaches while maintaining high speeds marks a significant milestone in Indian Railways’ pursuit of faster and safer transportation.
Once certified by the Railway Safety Commissioner, these trains will operate on routes such as Kashmir to Kanyakumari, Delhi to Mumbai, and Howrah to Chennai, reducing travel time significantly. With a current maximum permissible speed of 140 kmph for premium trains like the Tejas Rajdhani, Vande Bharat’s 180 kmph capability marks a significant leap forward.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared a video on social media showcasing the train’s trial success, reinforcing the government’s commitment to modernizing rail infrastructure. With 136 Vande Bharat trains already operational on short and medium-distance routes, the addition of sleeper trains will redefine the long-distance travel experience in India.
Passengers can look forward to high-speed, comfortable journeys with enhanced safety and reduced travel times, making Vande Bharat a symbol of India’s engineering prowess and a harbinger of the country’s high-speed rail revolution.
