Jamshedpur, April 24: In a tragic incident that has raised serious concerns over hospital security, an undertrial prisoner undergoing treatment at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Hospital allegedly died by suicide after jumping from the seventh floor of the facility on Friday afternoon.
The deceased has been identified as Ashok Kumar. According to officials, he was admitted to the hospital’s prisoner ward after previously attempting suicide inside jail by slitting his throat. He was rescued in time and shifted to MGM Hospital for medical care and observation.
Sources said that while being escorted to a doctor for a routine check-up, Kumar suddenly broke free from the police personnel accompanying him and rushed towards the edge of the building before leaping from the seventh floor. He died on the spot due to severe injuries.
The police have sent the body for post-mortem examination and initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Preliminary reports suggest that the deceased was mentally distressed and undergoing treatment. The incident has sparked questions over the adequacy of security arrangements within the hospital, particularly in high-risk wards housing prisoners.
Authorities are expected to review existing protocols to prevent such lapses in the future.
